Term 4

This term we will be learning all about ‘Space’.  We will learn some facts about space and write our own diary about our imaginary trip to space.  As part of science week, we will launch some rockets, and then design and make our own rockets!  In maths we will look at numbers to 10, and explore how we can make numbers 6 to 9.  We will explore measuring and use the words heavy and light.  We will also look at 3D shapes and some more patterns.   We will change our role play into a space station with a rocket!  We can dress up as astronauts and take our own trips to space!

Term 3

What a busy term we have had!  The term started really cold and we enjoyed exploring the ice .  We even had some animals that were frozen in the ice!  We enjoyed our ‘animaltastic day’ where all the children dressed up as an animal.  We had a great animal parade and the children even wrote about the animal they were.  We have changed our role play into a safari tent and enjoyed acting out with the animals and pretending to be on safari.  The children have learnt some great facts about animals and we have written our own animal fact file that we are making into a class book.  We have looked at rhyming words and explored rhyming strings with real words and nonsense words!  In maths, we have learnt our number facts to 5 and practised recalling these, even solving problems with them.  We enjoyed a game of skittles to help us consolidate our number facts to 5. We have looked at positional language and played hide and seek with our puppets and mini me’s.  We have explored measuring the height and length of things and even tried to measure the length using cubes and tape measures.    Our mud kitchen has been really muddy but luckily we have our waterproofs that we are wearing.  We have created some great art work as part of our animal topic including some lion faces which we painted yellow and added a variety of materials for the mane!  We have enjoyed using the small world animals outside and made some great animal enclosures using the wooden blocks!  We had a really fun ‘Number day’, where we dressed up as a representation of a number and explore lots of numbers and maths that day!

Term 2

We had a very busy term of learning especially through our topic of Transport!

We have looked at the teacher’s cars and really enjoyed our ‘Wheelie great day’. We had a race on our scooters and bikes and enjoyed riding around the obstacle course on our playground.  We even had a visit from PSCO Nick who brought his police van.  We had great fun afterwards acting out and pretending to be the police!  We did a road safety walk around the area and looked at how to be safe on the road.  We then practised this in our own playground with a zebra crossing and the bikes!

We have also enjoyed acting out in our role play garage, serving petrol and washing and mending the bikes. We have learnt the story Naughty bus and made our buses and acted out with them. The naughty buses got up to some naughty things, driving through the sand and making a mess with the shaving foam!

We have made some great vehicles with the loose parts and big blocks and really enjoyed acting out driving and using our imagination to go places.

In Maths, we have done lots of work of making numbers to 5 and showing this on our fingers.  We have also looked at 1 more and made some great stair case patterns to show this.  We have looked at 2D shape and made some great pictures, talking about and describing the shapes we had used.

We have finished the term with an amazing nativity, where the children acted and sang beautifully.

Term 1

Welcome to Whitehall Primary School and the Reception page.

What a busy 1st term the reception children have had!

They settled in really quickly and have enjoyed exploring their new environment.

The children have played together so nicely and made the most amazing dens, train tracks and animal houses.

We have been looking at families and they have loved talking about their own families and drew some great pictures.  We have been learning about keeping our bodies healthy!  We have done lots of exercise, looked at the skeleton and practised brushing some enormous teeth!

In maths we have explored numbers to 5 and looked at size and patterns.  We have explored making our own patterns using a range of things.

The children have loved the outside area, being really physical on the obstacle course, enjoying the den building and getting muddy in the mud kitchen making some great mud pies!

As part of ‘Black History Month’ we have thought about the theme this year of ‘Pride and power’.  We have talked about what makes us unique and what we are proud of.  We have made a picture of ourselves and drawn our favourite things and used our favourite colours.  We have also made a crown that we wore in our own ‘pride parade!’

The children are really settled in school and excited by all of the learning we are doing!
