Welcome to Year 5's Learning Page
Term 5 London
Welcome to London, everyone! This term, we will be diving into the vibrant and historic city of London. We will explore its magnificent landmarks and iconic monuments, discovering the stories and significance behind famous sights such as the Tower of London, Big Ben, and the London Eye.
In English, we will read the exciting novel The London Eye Mystery by Siobhan Dowd, using it to inspire our comprehension, discussion, and writing. This gripping story will help us develop our inference skills and deepen our understanding of character and plot.
To bring our learning to life, we will also be visiting London ourselves! This unforgettable experience will give us the chance to see these famous landmarks up close and make real-world connections with everything we have been studying. We can’t wait for the adventure ahead!

Overview
Term 4 Hidden Worlds
This term, we will study mysterious hidden worlds! To begin with, we will explore the magnificent picture book Journey. It is a really brilliant way for us to make predictions and practise our inference work - as we have to 'read' the story completely through its illustrations. We study the structure of the story in detail too which enables us to write our own words to accompany different parts of the adventure. Then, we write our own creative stories inspired by the elements of Journey that makes Aaron Becker's book so exciting for us to read.
We will also complete a unit on persuasive writing. We will learn all about the issues surrounding animals in captivity and focused on orcas for our class discussions. Then, we will learn about the sad story of Morgan, an orca currently in captivity in a Spanish waterpark. We then use a variety of persuasive writing techniques to compose letters demanding that she be set free - and send some of them all the way to Tenerife!

Here's what we got up to in Term 4!
This term, we studied mysterious hidden worlds. We began by exploring the magnificent picture book Journey, using its illustrations to make predictions and develop our inference skills by ‘reading’ the story visually. We also examined the story’s structure in detail, which helped us write our own accompanying narratives for different parts of the adventure. Inspired by the exciting elements of Aaron Becker’s work, we then created our own imaginative stories.
In addition, we completed a unit on persuasive writing. We explored the issues surrounding animals in captivity, with a focus on big cats used in circus performances. We used this knowledge to write letters to the Prime Minister, advocating for their release.
Mosque Visit
Throughout the autumn and spring terms, our focus in RE in Year 5 was Islam. To enrich our learning, we visited Easton Jamia Mosque, where the children had the opportunity to experience a mosque firsthand and make meaningful connections with their learning in school.
Term 3
Victorian Bristol
This term we will be focusing on History in our Victorian Bristol topic. We're looking forward to finding out what life was like for children and comparing it to other periods we've learnt about. We will be welcoming The History Squad into school to bring our learning to life as well as reading Berlie Doherty's story 'Street Child'. In Art we will be looking at a variety of Victorian artists and themes throughout this era.

Here's what we got up to in Term 3!
We have really enjoyed learning about the Victorians and discovering what life was like during this fascinating period in history. Our favourite part was our day trip to Sevington Victorian School, where we experienced what it was like to be a Victorian child. We took part in a traditional school day and learned about strict rules and punishments, including the use of articles of correction such as the cane and the dunce hat. It was a fun and memorable way to bring our learning to life.
Term 2
Intrepid Adventures
We are going to take the opportunity to explore the globe alongside some of the most incredible adventurers in history: specifically the unsung heroes and pioneers of exploration.

Here's what we've been up to in Term 2!
Year 5 had a truly adventurous day in the Wilderness as part of their Intrepid Explorers topic. The children threw themselves into a range of exciting activities, from learning how to filter water and navigating through orienteering challenges, to sparking flames with flint and steel and constructing sturdy dens. Creativity flourished as they painted pebbles with uplifting messages of hope and expressed themselves through mud art, making the day both practical and inspiring. A huge thank you goes to the parents who joined us and gave their time to help—your support made the experience even more special.
