Reception Learning 2024 - 25
Term 4
This term we will be learning all about ‘space’. We will learn some information about space and planets and have our own imaginary trip to space after looking at the book ‘Whatever next?’!
As part of our STEM week we will be sending some rockets flying and also designing, making and evaluating our own rockets.
As part of our maths learning we will be learning about comparing weight, the composition of numbers to 10 and pattern.
In phonics we will be practising all the di graphs we have learnt so far and the common exception words. We will practise writing simple sentences using finger spaces, capital letters and full stops.
We will be changing our role play into our very own 'Whitehall Space Station', where we will have a rocket and mission control. We will be able to dress up as astronauts and act out going to space!

Term 3
What a busy term we have had! The term started really cold and we enjoyed exploring the ice and snow. We even had some animals that were frozen in the ice!
We enjoyed our ‘animaltastic day’ where all the children dressed up as an animal. We had a great animal parade and the children even write about the animal they were.
We have changed our role play into a safari tent and enjoyed acting out with the animals and pretending to be on safari.
The children have learnt some great facts about animals and we have written our own animal fact file that we are making into a class book. We have looked at rhyming words and explored rhyming strings with real words and nonsense words!
In maths, we have learnt our number facts to 5 and practised recalling these, even solving problems with them. We have looked at positional language and played hide and seek with our puppets and mini me’s. We have explored measuring the height and length of things and even tried to measure the length using cubes.
Our mud kitchen has been really muddy but luckily we have some new waterproofs that we are wearing. We have really enjoyed making some great mud pies, getting really muddy and even having to be hosed down!
We have created some great art work as part of our animal topic including some lion faces which we painted yellow and added a variety of materials for the mane. We have also made some watercolour backgrounds and then drawn our own animal on top. They look really good!

Term 2
We had a very busy term of learning especially through our topic of Transport! We have looked at the teacher’s cars and really enjoyed our ‘Wheelie great day’. We even had a visit from PSCO Nick who brought his police van. We had great fun afterwards acting out and pretending to be the police!
We did a road safety walk around the area and looked at how to be safe on the road. We then practised this in our own playground with a zebra crossing and the bikes! We have also enjoyed acting out in our role play garage, serving petrol and washing and mending the bikes.
We have learnt the story Naughty bus and made our buses and acted out with them. We have had some strange weather this term, from really windy, to really sunny and then snow!
We enjoyed exploring the ice and snow. We also made shadow puppets with the sun. We have finished the term with an amazing nativity, where the children acted and sang beautifully.
Term 1
What a busy 1st term the reception children have had!
They settled in really quickly and have enjoyed exploring their new environment.
The children have played together so nicely and made the most amazing dens, train tracks and animal houses.
We have been looking at families and they have loved talking about their own families and drew some great pictures. We have been learning about keeping our bodies healthy! We have done lots of exercise, looked at the skeleton and practised brushing some enormous teeth!
In maths we have explored numbers to 5 and looked at size and patterns. We have explored making our own patterns using a range of things.
The children have loved the outside area and even though it has rained a lot, this has made the mud kitchen even more exciting and they have made some great mud pies!
As part of ‘Black History Month’ we have learnt about the ‘Bristol bus boycott’ and had a visit from Julz Davis who spoke to us about the boycott and the bus he has created. We then decorated our own buses.
The children are really settled in school and excited by all of the learning we are doing!
