Welcome to Year 2's Learning Page

Here, you will find out about all our magnificent learning and educational escapades!

We will be gathering knowledge on a diverse range of topics, producing creative and engaging pieces of writing and delving deeper into the world of problem solving!

Have a read at our termly plans.

Term 6

Our topic will be 'Our Living World' this term and we are all really looking forward to all the wonderful learning to come. We will have lots of fun exploring habitats for bugs and insects, learning about the life cycle of a butterfly and even having our own caterpillars to watch make their changes in our classrooms! This term is full of lots of outdoor learning which we are really excited about, we cannot wait to explore the Wilderness more. We will also have the excitement of Sing Up day, Arts week and Health & Wellbeing week.

Check back at the end of the term to find out more and see photos of what we've been up to!

Have a look at these websites with your child for some extra learning about our topic:

Fun ideas to do at home:

Go for a bug hunt in your local area, use the websites above to help identify them. Think about why that minibeast might have chosen to live in that habitat.

Design an invented minibeast. What does it look like? How does it move around? What does it eat? Think of an amazing name for it.

Term 5

In this term’s learning, the children will build on their previous learning on bird habitats. Children will carry out a focused study on nocturnal animals living in local woodlands, part of this will be children will set up a webcam in our wooded area to find out what comes out at night! They will compare this through their geography study of nocturnal animals living in Kenya. While in English, they will start the term reading "Fantastic Mr. Fox" by Roald Dahl along with acting out the classic poem "The Owl and the Pussycat". To excite the children  further and to learn more interesting facts, we will be having a nocturnal animal workshop. Watch this space for photos!

North Somerset Birds of Prey centre owl workshop.

To help enrich our English topic we were really lucky to have a visit from the North Somerset Birds of Prey centre who bought along four owls for us to marvel at (a Little owl, Scops owl, Chaco owl and the Boobook owl). We really enjoyed learning many facts about what they eat, when they hunt and learning all of the features. We were so happy when Brandon allowed us to have our photos taken next to Darwin!

End of Term 4

Arrrgghhh scallywags! What a fantastic term we have had in Year 2.  The children have loved learning about Pirates and Amazing Engineers. The trip was a huge success and the children really enjoyed exploring the SS Great Britain. We started off exploring the dockyard museum and imagined what life was like on the boat while dressing up as a Victorian and steering the ship. On deck, the Year 2's saw animals that would have been aboard while the SS Great Britain was sailing. Below deck, we explored the passenger quarters where children found out gruesome facts and got to experience life as a first class Victorian passenger. At the end of the day, Year 2 loved going to the 'Being Brunel' museum and got an opportunity to see inside the mind of the great engineer.

We also invited parents for in for STEM Week to share the jobs that they do as engineers. Thank you very much parents! It was great to learn about life as a modern day engineer.

Term 4

Our topic will be 'Sailing the Seas and Amazing Engineers' this term and we are all SO excited! As well as learning lots of fascinating pirate facts, we will also be finding out about amazing achievements in engineering. Year 2 children get to add to their amazing knowledge by visiting the SS Great Britain.  Do not forget this term will be World Book Day where we will have many activties related to reading and the chance to dress up as your favourite book character. Who will you dress up as?

Check back at the end of the term to find out more and see photos of what we've been up to!

Term 3

This term our topic is A Journey into Space! The children will do a deep dive into the history of space flight looking at the space race and key contributors such as Neil Armstrong and Katherine Johnson with an exciting visit from Space Odyssey to really immerse children in the topic. In English, the children will be inventing their own space stories after reading the wonderful story of Beegu and writing exciting non-fiction persuading readers to visit the moon! In maths, we will continue to cover multiplication and lead onto division.

Check back at the end of the term to find out more and see photos of what we've been up to!

End of Term 3

Moon Buggy DT day.

For our Design Technology day children had to design and make moon buggies for Bob the Man on the Moon to transport tourists around in. Children had to work in small groups and really think about the exterior and interior of the moon buggies. We had lots of discussion around having strong large wheels to get in and out of craters and extremely comfortable seats for tourists to relax and enjoy the rocky ride! Using these ideas, children then designed and made their own moon buggies using recycled materials. Later in the day, children then had to test their moon buggies by rolling them down the tunnel in the playground. Nearly all of the buggies survived and most tourists stayed in their seats! The Year 2 children are so proud of their moon buggies and are so happy that Reception will be using them to kick-start their Space topic next term.

Space Odyssey dome experience.

The children had a fantastic visit from Simon at Space Odyssey, they were mesmerised with the wonder of space and really enjoyed learning facts about the universe. They could recognise that the sun is a star, find out why the sun moves across the sky, look for different phases of the moon and discover how to spot the pictures and stories in the stars.

Term  2

This term our topic is Superheroes! We will be having a 'Superhero Day' (date TBC) where children can come in dressed as a superhero! On this day, children will have the chance to design and make their own superhero badges. For English, we will be reading many superhero books to inspire us with our writing. Some of the books include Traction Man and Nat Fantastic. For Math, there will be a huge focus on addition and subtraction as well as securing our numbefacts to help us with our mental strategies.  For History, we will be learning about the Great Fire of London as well as reminding ourselves of the fire safety rules. Amongst all this fun, we will be practicing for our Nativity and enjoying lots of Christmas events.

'Great Fire of London' Day

Year 2 had a fantastic week learning about when and why the Great fire of London started. We had many interesting discussions talking about why the fire spread so quickly and talked about what good came from the Great Fire of London. We wrote diaries in the voice of Samuel Pepys with sounds effects of crackling fire and visual walkthroughs of the pre-fire London streets to inspire them and in the afternoon, we created our own houses using cereal boxes.

Superhero Day

Superhero Day was a success and the children enjoyed the DT lessons, which involved researching, designing and making their own eco-friendly badges.  We were so proud of their sewing skills and were grateful for all the adults who came to help.

Our WOW world day was a super day for everyone! We took part in a variety of activities all with sustainability in mind. We cooked a dish using plants grown on the school site, followed by making seed bombs to help us learn about replenishing the resources that we take from the Earth. Finally, we exercised our recycling skills and made clothes from recycled junk.

Forest School in the Wilderness

This term we had the chance to take part in a forest school session up in our newly developed wildreness area, with our brand new friends Frida and Fonda. During this all day experience, we learned about the importance of resilience and risk taking, while developing a healthy love and respect for the outdoors!

We have been learning all about the continents of the world in geography and finding out about the 7 wonders of the world. We have mapped the continents, the oceans and the equator and learnt where to find cold, temperate, warm and tropical climates and what sort of animals live there. In addition, we have been learning about compass directions and used them to direct our partners on a trip around the world!

We conducted an experiment in science to find out what plants really need to grow and made some very interesting discoveries! Did you know that a seed can germinate and grow without soil? We have grown our own sunflowers and French beans from seeds, found out about how plants spread their seeds and why leaves are green! We have been practising the scientific skills of observing, making predictions and thinking about ways to ensure a fair test.
